Vastlapäev, known as Shrove Tuesday in much of the English-speaking world, the Estonians celebrate this day a little differently.
Instead of pancakes, we eat split pea soup and the delicious Vastlakukkel cream cake.
Traditionally children will sled down any available hill of snow, to get “long linens”. And not only children. Tomorrow, after the meeting I am going with my colleges to sled, as well.
And later we have pea soup and Vastlakukkel!
Today, of course, nobody cares about linen, this is just for fun:)
The name Vastlapaev is taken from the German word “fasten” (to fast). And after Vastlapäev started fast, because meat ran out.
This year I did broad beans stew.
I used fresh broad beans. in case you are going to use dried, let them swell overnight
To add more colors add a different color of tomatoes and peppers or zucchini
Did you know? The longest ice road – conditions permitting – in Europe is the Rohuküla-Heltermaa ice road with a length of 26.5 kilometers (16 miles), stretching for across a frozen expanse of the Baltic Sea. The road links Estonia’s mainland port of Rohuküla on the continent with Hiiumaa island. The longest known ice road originating from Estonia was located between Saaremaa island and Lübeck (a city in Germany) in 1323. Continue reading “Broadbean and Tomato Stew. The Baltic herring is one of the most important fish in the whole of the Baltic Sea and the Estonians’ feeder for centuries.
In 2007 the Baltic herring was announced the national Estonian Fish. The Baltic herring is such an everyday fish for us and believe me, we have a lot of recipe books like ” 100 dishes from Baltic herring”.
Since Baltic Herring are cheap fish, she had a reputation for many years as a poor human food. But because of delicious taste this reputation is gone. And from early spring to late autumn, Baltic Herring is mandatory part of Estonian cuisine.
Especially in spring, because the spring Baltic herring is big, fat and delicious.

• If you can find a fern’s blossom on a Midsummer night, you will be rich and become able to understand animal languages.
So, if you are rich and beautiful and able to speak with everyone, you are will definitely get married 🙂
Jaaniõhtu (Midsummer Eve – 23 June) and Jaanipäev (Midsummer Day, St John’s Day – 24 June) are the most important holidays in the Estonian calendar.
Jaanipäev is summer solstice and we say ” sun do not go down”.
In Estonian fairy tales and literature, there is a tale of two lovers, Koit (dawn) and Hämarik (dusk). These two lovers see each other only once a year and exchange the briefest of kisses on the shortest night of the year. Earth-bound lovers go into the forest looking for the “flower of the fern” which is said to bloom only on that night.
I have been to many countries, and one of the biggest differences in eating culture/habits/cuicine is how salad is served.
Salad as a main or separate dish, this is understandable. You can have Caesare Salad for lunch for example.
But, how is salad served, as accompany for the main dish, are differences between countries.
There are three courses in most countries : appetizer; main dish, which includes protein and salad and then dessert.
However, there are exceptions, as well. I was amazed to see that in Portugal rice and potato (with some meat/fish) were served on the same plate .. In addition to that we visited a restaurant with a very generous cook in Malta 🙂 french fries, boiled potato, couscous, pasta were on the same plate. And some bread of course. and a LOT of meat 🙂 Continue reading “6 Simple Salad to accompany the main dish”→
