Marinated Baltic Herrings

Baltic Herrings are Estonian national fish. We use them lot and “leftovers” are served in the different flavored marinade.  This is only one recipe.

Marinated Baltic Herrings

Baltic Herrings are Estonian national fish. Marinade make this dish more festive

Ingredients

  • ca 500 g Baltic Herrings fillet
  • 1 egg
  • ca 2 tablespoon flour
  • salt, pepper
  • Marinade:

  • 1 litre water
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 carrot, cut into slices
  • 1 onion, cut into slices
  • 4-5 tablespoon 30% food vinegar
  • pepper, spice, laurel

Directions

  1. Mix herrings in salt and pepper
  2. Dip into the beaten egg and roll in flour
  3. Fry the fillets on both sides in hot pan
  4. Cool fish down.
  5. Marinade:

  6. Boil carrot and onion half- ready
  7. Add spices and allow the water to boil once more. Add the vinegar and remove from the heat.
  8. Cool down
  9. Pour the cooled marinad over the cooled fish. Let to stand and season. Keep in the fridge
  10. Serve with boiled potatos and sour-cream-sauce or eat as appetiser or cold snack with bread.

  1. I really don’t know anything about Estonian food, so it is great to have found your blog. My husband loves marinated herring salad (the German version of it), I am sure he would like this as well. 🙂

    1. Thank you. Germans has maybe simar taste with Estonians. But for example Swedish taste is toooo different..:) they have ( in my opinion) too sweet marinades. So, you have to try and test 🙂
